I love watercolor.
I honestly forgot how much I love this medium and painting in general. The temperature outside was finally under 80 degrees, so we went outside and painted the campus. I decided to paint a fun looking tree that is outside the student center at Pitt State. My professor gave us some tips on how to create a watercolor sketch outside. First, make a line drawing of the subject. Second, lay in a wash of all the colors that are going to be in the painting. Third, lay in the mid tones and some details. Finally, lay in more details and add in the darks to create more contrast. I took a plein air painting course a couple semesters ago, and it really helped me to simplify the shapes and to work fast. I'm still getting used to having to wait before adding the next layer of color. I like working fast, but you really have to slow down an think about your next move with watercolor.

A couple weeks ago I did an inking assignment using nibs, this past week I had to use a brush. Overall the brush is not my favorite to use, but it has certain advantages.
This week was my last "Family Day" weekend at Pittsburg State University. I was so happy that my parents came down for it.
On Friday we went to Tulsa, OK to visit the University of Tulsa for a graduate program that I am interested in. Then on Saturday we went to see Big Brutus. If you have never experienced Big Brutus you should. It took my dad and I four and a half years to convince my mom to go see it. After Big Brutus we went to the Pitt State Football game and I FINALLY got a picture with our mascot Gus the Gorilla! It honestly made my entire day. Pitt State played an amazing game and ended up going into overtime and winning! This afternoon I am helping out at the New Member meeting for Alpha Gamma Delta and I am also taking their Christmas card picture. I love being able to help out with my chapter even though I am an alum now. Overall the weekend has been great! This semester I am taking a Traditional Watercolor course. We have finally started painting!
Here is the first watercolor sketch that I have done. I haven't worked with watercolor since high school and I am beyond excited to work with it again! This semester I am taking a course called, "Drawing with Ink". I have never drawn anything with a nib before this class. The illustrations below are from the first assignment and so far I'm a fan of nibs.
Over the weekend I went to St. Louis to visit the University of Missouri - St. Louis to learn more about their Museum Studies graduate program.
While I was in the city, I decided to bring out my inner child and go to the zoo! Of course my favorite exhibit was the penguins, but the big cats were a close second. Over Labor Day Weekend, I got to "petsit" my sister's cat while she went on a road trip. While I was in Arkansas, I got to meet with the Exhibition Designer at the Crystal Bridges Museum and talk with her about her experience in a Museum Studies graduate program that I am interested in.
I also worked on some sketches for my Traditional Watercolor class. My sister's cat, Charlie Bird, decided to critique some of my sketches...she approved them. |
